Celebrity autographs have always been difficult signatures to authenticate. This is simply because there are so many factors that have to be taken into consideration.
Firstly was the celebrity sitting, standing, walking? Was it a quick signature or a full signature? Did they use a sharpie, a ball point, a paint pen?
Always make sure you are aware of what the celebritys signature is supposed to look like.
I came across a fake autograph of Angelina Jolie on an auction site recently, which
looked nothing like her signature, going for next to nothing, so i decided to buy it
to share with you all.
Knowing your source is one of the most important things to take into consideration.
Always check the credentials of the person you are buying from, make sure you are buying
from a valid UACC member. Even with years of experience in the business, to authenticate an
autograph may come down to the credibility of the source.
Only buy in person autographs. In person autographs are pictures or documents that have been
directly given to that celebrity for them to sign. Busy celebrities may use the autopen. The
autopen can be difficult to detect to the average fan, but once you get to recognise the
celebritys signature you also get to recognise the autopen because every autograph signed by
the autopen will be identical. These are not classed as authentic.
Other celebrities may get a secretary to sign their fan mail, again this can look familiar to the
star in question, but like the autopen, worthless.
